Rents (orientation)

Rents are often quoted in USD or CRC. Numbeo (San José, Nov 2026, limited sample) roughly lists: 1-bed city centre about ₡300,000–933,000/month (about USD 650–2,050), outside about ₡200,000–707,000 (about USD 440–1,560). Escazú and Santa Ana are often higher in sought-after areas; coastal tourist towns swing with the season.

Health insurance (CCSS)

  • Public: CCSS (Caja) — access for the insured; waits and quality vary by place
  • Residency: CCSS affiliation is often mandatory for DIMEX
  • Private clinics and top-ups are common in centres — no product recommendation
  • Digital nomads: program requires own policy (at least about USD 50,000) for the stay
  • Newcomers: keep adequate cover until local status is clear

Places at a glance

San José

Jobs, agencies, culture, SJO airport. Watch traffic and safety in some neighbourhoods; many expat services.

Escazú / Santa Ana

West of the capital, popular residential areas and malls — often higher rents.

Heredia / Alajuela

Central Valley, university and airport proximity; sometimes quieter than SJ centre.

Guanacaste / Tamarindo

Beach, surfing, tourism; dry season and remote-work infrastructure — seasonal prices.

Puerto Viejo

Caribbean, slower pace, rainforest — less big-city infrastructure.

Daily life

  • Power: 120 V, plugs type A/B
  • Time: UTC−6, no daylight saving
  • Internet: fibre/LTE in cities and many tourist spots; uneven in rural areas
  • Transport: nationwide buses; ride-hailing in SJ; rental cars practical but watch roads and parking
  • Language: Spanish; English in tourism bubbles
  • Banking: strict KYC; residency/DIMEX helps; nomad program mentions options under conditions
