Visa families V, M and R

Cancillería organizes three visa families: Visitor (V), Migrant (M) and Resident (R), each with subcategories. Short visa-exempt stays often use Migración Colombia’s PIP.

PIP – short stay

Per Migración Colombia, the PIP authorizes entry and a short stay without intent to domicile. Different PIP types (e.g. tourism) typically last up to 90 calendar days; extensions are possible without exceeding 180 days in the same calendar year (official text).

  • Purpose and nationality determine whether a visa is needed before travel.
  • Extensions and PTP switches follow current Migración procedures.
  • Remote work without pay from Colombian companies: for visa-exempt nationals, Cancillería’s nomad note allows staying under PIP limits (90/180) — verify on the official source.

V – Digital nomad

Per Cancillería (Visa V Nómadas digitales): remote work or digital entrepreneurship from Colombia exclusively for foreign companies. Passport from a short-stay visa-exempt country; employer/partner letter in Spanish or English; bank statements showing at least 3 SMMLV income over the last 3 months; health insurance covering Colombia. Validity up to 2 years; dependents possible. No paid activity for persons or companies domiciled in Colombia.

  • 3 SMMLV (2026) ≈ COP 5.25 million / month (≈ USD 1,280 at ca. COP 4,100).
  • Visa-exempt remote workers may stay on a PIP without a visa while unpaid by Colombian firms and within the 90/180-day limit (Cancillería note).

M Pensionado & Rentista

M Pensionado (Cancillería): monthly lifetime pension of at least 3 SMMLV, apostilled/translated or via diplomatic mission; police clearance; medical fitness; health cover. Validity up to 3 years; no work allowed; can accumulate time toward residence (typically 5 years as holder).

Rentista (Cancillería overview): demonstrable periodic income of at least 10 SMMLV; validity up to 2 years; health insurance required.

  • 3 SMMLV (2026) ≈ COP 5.25 million / month.
  • 10 SMMLV (2026) ≈ COP 17.5 million / month (≈ USD 4,270).

M Investor

Per Cancillería: foreign direct investment above 650 SMMLV (BanRep extracts) or property solely in the applicant’s name worth at least 350 SMMLV plus BanRep registration; solvency (3 months of statements); insurance. Validity up to 3 years; renewals must show the investment was maintained.

  • 350 SMMLV (2026) ≈ COP 613 million (≈ USD 149,000).
  • 650 SMMLV (2026) ≈ COP 1.14 trillion (≈ USD 278,000).
