Living & Costs

Rent, daily costs, health and cities — orientation figures in USD and CLP.

Updated: November 2026

Rental prices (orientation)

Rents vary widely by neighborhood (in Santiago e.g. Providencia, Las Condes, Ñuñoa vs. center). Many contracts use UF (Unidad de Fomento) — monthly CLP amounts move with the UF. Numbeo (Oct/Nov 2026) gives medians/ranges — no guarantee and volatile. Rough conversion approx. 980 CLP ≈ 1 USD (rate moves; always check current).

Numbeo roughly estimates without rent: Santiago single ~690 USD / family of 4 ~2,480 USD (Nov 2026). Covers roughly food, local transport, internet. Not included: international private insurance, international schools, frequent domestic flights. No guarantee — run your own numbers.

Health insurance

  • Public: FONASA — access for contributors/certain groups; coverage and wait times vary by place
  • Private: ISAPRE — plans and contributions highly age-/coverage-dependent
  • Regular migrants who contribute can, per Minsal, be linked to FONASA or ISAPRE — check status and contributions (typically 7% of taxable income)
  • Advice for newcomers: adequate private/travel cover until local status is clear; no product recommendation

Cities compared

Santiago

Jobs, culture, airport. Winter air quality often problematic; rents higher in eastern communes.

Valparaíso / Viña

Coast, culture, tourism. Hills and earthquake history; humidity.

Concepción

South-central Chile, university city, cheaper than Santiago in some segments.

Puerto Varas / lakes

Tourism, nature, cooler climate — popular with remote workers; seasonal rents are not “cheap.”

Daily life

  • Internet: fiber widely available in large cities
  • Transport: metro/bus in Santiago; coastal cities with micro/bus; car often more practical in the south
  • Language: Chilean Spanish (faster, with voseo/slang) — worth learning deliberately
  • Earthquake prep: emergency plan, water/food, secure heavy furniture
  • Banking: RUT required; digital and branch banks with KYC
