Worldwide income for tax residents, IR table, IVA and ISD — overview for an international audience, not tax advice.
Updated: November 2026
Tax system – overview
- Tax residents: generally worldwide income (Impuesto a la Renta) — check nuances and time-limited regimes (incl. temporary tax residence) in the LRTI
- Tax residency among other rules at ≥ 183 calendar days in the tax year (including sporadic absences) or further criteria (center of economic interests / closest family ties) — Art. 4.1 LRTI
- IVA 15% (legal band 13–15%, set by decree; 5% construction materials, 0% basic goods, 8% tourism on holidays by decree)
- ISD (foreign-exchange exit tax): general rate often 5% on certain outflows; exemptions (e.g. cash about 3 SBU, card use abroad with an annual allowance) — current SRI rules
- Authority: SRI (Servicio de Rentas Internas)
Migration status is not automatically tax status. Long tourist stays (including extensions toward 180 days) can approach the 183-day threshold.

Companies (brief)
Common forms (simplified)
| Form | Short character |
|---|---|
| Cía. Ltda. / S.A. | Common companies |

| SAS and others | Further forms under commercial law |
RUC registration and ongoing SRI duties depend on the form. Clarify incorporation with local professionals.
Banks & payments
- Major banks include Pichincha, Guayaquil, Pacífico, Produbanco; strict KYC
- USD accounts; transfers with fees and possible ISD implications
- Cards and digital wallets common in cities
- Without residency/cédula, opening an account is often harder
Double taxation & home country
Whether and how double taxation is avoided or eased depends on the tax law and any treaties between your home or residence country and Ecuador. There is no single rule for all nationalities. Check your own tax authority and any DTAs; professional advice is recommended.
