Updated: Research as of: November 2026

Top regions & routes

Panama City & Canal

Casco Viejo, financial district skyline, Miraflores locks and Amador Causeway — usual first stop.

Bocas del Toro

Caribbean islands, surfing and boat hops; wetter climate and slower pace.

San Blas / Guna Yala

Protected cayes; overnight stays often in community lodges — check access rules.

Chiriquí & Pacific

Boquete highland coffee country; Pacific beaches toward Pedasí/Azuero.

Also: Portobelo (Caribbean history), Coiba (marine park), Darién (restricted/remote — check access). Domestic flights and long-distance buses link regions.

Best time to visit

  • Dry season (roughly Dec–Apr) is usually clearer on the Pacific side.
  • Rainy season (roughly May–Nov): short heavy showers; Caribbean Bocas can be wet year-round.
  • Hurricane belt risk is lower than further north, but tropical storms and flooding still occur — follow local alerts.

Safety

Usual urban and travel caution. Check your home country’s official advice — we do not invent scenarios.

  • In Panama City: Casco Viejo and many central areas are busy by day; use registered taxis/apps at night.
  • Keep phones and bags secure on buses and in crowds.

Money & payments

Currency: balboa (PAB) at par with the US dollar; USD notes and coins circulate widely. Cards are common in cities; keep some cash for islands and markets.

Entry (tourism / visit)

Many nationalities enter as tourists without a prior visa; others need an authorised visa. The authorised stay is set at entry (stamp/control) and commonly up to about 90 days — some nationalities may receive longer under reciprocity (e.g. reports of up to 180 days). Always verify with SNM and your consulate for your passport.

  • Valid passport (often with remaining validity as required by SNM/airline).
  • Proof of onward travel and sufficient funds are frequently requested.
  • Tourist status does not allow paid local work.

Practical tips

  • Canal visit: Miraflores visitor centre — check opening times and ship schedules.
  • San Blas: arrange transport and community rules in advance.
  • Mosquito protection for Caribbean and rainy-season travel.
  • Spanish helps outside tourist hubs; English is more common in business districts.
