Regions, season, entry and practical tips — an overview for Paraguay.

Updated: November 2026

Top regions & routes

Asunción

Capital on the Paraguay River: Palacio de los López, Panteón de los Héroes, Costanera, Villa Morra / Carmelitas for dining and apartments. ASU airport links the country.

San Bernardino

Lake Ypacaraí weekend town east of the capital — summer heat, beach clubs, seasonal crowds.

Encarnación & Jesuit missions

Southern river city; day trips to Trinidad & Jesús (UNESCO). Beach strip on the Paraná in season.

Ciudad del Este / Monday / Itaipú

Eastern triple-border trade hub; Saltos del Monday; Itaipú dam visits subject to current rules.

Chaco / Filadelfia

Vast dry west; Mennonite colonies around Filadelfia; long distances, heat, sparse services — plan fuel and water.

Interior east

Cattle, yerba and small towns between Asunción and the Paraná — quieter than the capital.

Distances look modest on a map but road quality varies. Long-distance buses and domestic flights help; rental cars suit lake and mission routes.

Safety

Risks vary by neighbourhood and time of day. Petty theft occurs in cities and border areas; remote Chaco travel needs preparation. Flooding and heat are seasonal hazards. Check your home country’s official advice and local notices — no country comparisons and no guarantees here.

  • Keep valuables discreet; hotel safe; registered taxis / ride-hailing at night in Asunción
  • Choose districts deliberately (e.g. Villa Morra, Carmelitas, parts of downtown Costanera)
  • Border zones and remote roads: avoid night driving when unsure
  • Mosquito protection in wet/hot months (dengue)

Money & payments

Official currency is the guaraní (PYG). US dollars are widely accepted for larger purchases and rentals; cards work in cities. Exchange rates move — use banks/ATMs carefully and watch fees.

  • ATMs of major banks in Asunción, Encarnación, Ciudad del Este
  • Small PYG notes for buses, markets and tips
  • USD cash often for deposits and some leases — clarify currency in contracts

Entry (tourism)

Under Ley N° 6984/2022, Residencia Espontánea u Ocasional (tourist/occasional stay) may be granted for up to 90 days, extendable by the same period within the year — it is not a prior requirement for temporary residence (Art. 45). Many nationalities enter visa-free as tourists; others need a visa — always verify with Migraciones and your consulate. Tourist status usually does not allow local employment.

  • Passport with sufficient validity; return/onward ticket and funds may be requested
  • Primary source: migraciones.gov.py
  • Document stamps and any extension receipts
  • Visa rules depend on nationality — no invented fee tables here

  • Plugs type C, 220 V — check adapters

  • Summer heat is intense: plan outdoor activity for mornings
