Top regions & routes

Lima & Costa Verde

Capital with Plaza Mayor, Miraflores, Barranco and cliffs to the Costa Verde. Good entry point; coastal winter garúa (mist).

Cusco, Sacred Valley & Machu Picchu

Andean classic; mind altitude and ticket quotas. Trains and buses to Aguas Calientes.

Arequipa & Colca

White City, condors in the Colca Valley; gateway toward Puno/Titicaca.

Amazon (Iquitos / Tambopata)

Rainforest from Iquitos (no road link) or Puerto Maldonado/Tambopata — arrange vaccines and lodges early.

Also: Trujillo/Chan Chan on the north coast, Huaraz (trekking), Nazca Lines. Long-distance buses and domestic flights link regions.

Best time to visit

  • Andes (Cusco/Puno): dry season ca. May–Sep often clearer; rains Nov–Mar (wet trails, fewer crowds).
  • Coast (Lima): Dec–Apr sunnier; winter cooler with garúa.
  • Amazon: humid year-round; high water can change boat routes.
  • El Niño / heavy rains and earthquake risk: follow local authority alerts.

Safety

Usual urban and travel caution. Check your home country’s official advice — we do not invent scenarios.

  • In Lima: Miraflores/Barranco by day are common choices; be careful with isolated beaches and informal taxis.
  • Cash and cards: cards are widely used in cities; keep some PEN for markets and buses.

Money & payments

Currency: sol (PEN). Rough FX for conversions below: ca. 3.5 PEN ≈ 1 USD (Numbeo-derived, Nov 2026; rates move).

Entry (tourism / visit)

“Turista” status (DL 1350 / Regulations): tourism/leisure only, no paid work. Maximum stay per the Regulations: 183 days accumulable within 365 days; generally not extendable. The stamp at entry may grant less (discretionary). Visa needs depend on nationality.

  • Check the Andean Migration Card (virtual) and authorised stay; overstays: fine e.g. 0.1% of UIT per day (Migraciones guidance).
  • Andean Community: special extension rules may apply — check the current Migraciones campaign.
  • Valid passport; onward ticket often required.

Practical tips

  • Machu Picchu: entry + train + bus; daily quotas — book early.
  • Altitude: take it easy on day one in Cusco; coca tea is not a substitute for rest.
  • Set lunch menus often beat tourist-strip dinners on value.
  • Rain layer and layers for the Andes; insect repellent for the Amazon.
