Stay paths: tourism, migratory categories (rentista, worker, investor, digital nomad) and the carné de extranjería.

Updated: Research as of: November 2026

Tourism vs residence

A tourist stay (up to 183 days accumulated / 365 days, generally without extension) does not allow paid work. Longer stays and work go through Migraciones categories (DL 1350, amended e.g. by DL 1582).

Per Migraciones (gob.pe trámite): for people with a retirement pension or permanent income from a Peruvian or foreign source; grants indefinite stay. Foreign source: prove permanent net income of at least USD 1,000, legalised/apostilled; sworn statement that funds enter via a bank.

  • Online via Agencia Digital Migraciones; fee on the page e.g. S/ 161.40 (code 07568) — verify the amount.
  • Documents include passport, form, criminal-record declaration; Interpol sheet: legal situation has shifted — read the live requirement on the trámite page.

Digital nomad

Added by DL 1582 (2023): remote subordinate work for a company domiciled outside Peru; no paid activities with Peruvian-source income. Stay up to 365 days, renewable (Migraciones press note and statute).

Worker, investor & others

  • Worker: subordinate (or certain independent) activity; contract usually needs prior Labour Ministry approval; stay under DL 1350 e.g. 365 days.
  • Investor: lawful investment; amount and conditions in the Regulations — check the current threshold with Migraciones (we do not invent a fixed figure).
  • Family of resident, study, religious, etc.: their own requirements.

Carné de extranjería

ID document for foreigners with resident status. Per Migraciones: validity e.g. 4 years (resident), 5 years (permanent), 3 years (minors); renew typically 30 days before expiry via the Digital Agency.
